• Economist: Chinese economy is switching from export driving to domestic consumption

China's GDP grew 6.7 percent in the first quarter, slowing from 6.9 percent growth in the preceding quarter but still in line with the official target of "a range of 6.5 to 7 percent growth" for 2016. In the first three months, major indicators showed that the economy was operating in a reasonable range. The growth of gross domestic product, urban job creation and incomes of urban and rural residents all met the targets. An international economist said the Chinese economy is going through a difficult switching period now and it's normal that the economy will slow.

Statistics Korea says a jump in production in the semiconductor and petroleum industries worked to offset what would've otherwise been a much bigger decline. But it's not all doom and gloom. Domestic consumption expanded last month,… increasing four-point-two percent on the back of robust sales of durable and non-durable goods like automobiles and cosmetics. "Domestic demand is good at this time,… and the improved Leading Composite Index indicates the economy will pick up smooth recovery momentum in the future." Production in the service sector grew over two percent on-year and half-a-percent on-month,... thanks to the steady stream of Chinese tourists vacationing in Korea. Experts say, looking ahead, the general output figures won't change much. "Considering that there aren't many external factors looming that would hamper both the local and global economy,... current circumstances will persist for the time being." But experts add the potential U.S. rate hike in the coming months may add reason for greater concern down the line. Shin Se-min, Arirang News. 소비, 5년7개월만에 최대 감소 Last month, domestic consumption fell by the largest amount in more than five years. According to Statistics Korea, retail sales plunged in all categories, from household appliances to clothing. The agency said that was accompanied by a dip in industrial production... the first since April. Kim Hyo-sun reports. Domestic consumption in Korea showed the largest drop in more than 5-and-a-half years, coupled with the worldwide recall and production halt of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Note 7. According to Statistics Korea, last month's retail sales, which reflect overall consumption, plunged 4.5 percent, compared to a month earlier... in all categories including food and beverages, household appliances and clothing. This was the largest dip since February of 2011. The nation's industrial output also dipped for the first time since April... and by the biggest amount since January. The report said production in the services and construction industries retreated zero-point-8 percent compared to a month earlier. Still, production in the mining and manufacturing sectors increased zero-point-3 percent thanks to a rise in automobile production, as the effects of a strike at the nation's largest carmaker Hyundai Motor Group subsided. Korea, the world's 12th largest economy, may have reached the limits of its ability to induce growth in the local economy by solely relying on exports. Kim Ji-yeon reports. Booming exports were once the golden ticket for the Korean economy. But in recent years there has been rising speculation that the country's export-driven economy may have reached the limits of its ability to induce growth. Data from the Bank of Korea shows the number of those employed has gradually reduced... despite a surge in exports. That's a sharp reduction from 1995, when more than 20 people found new jobs for every increase in exports of the same amount. Many in Korea suggest, rather than focusing on exports, there's a need to shift the focus to other areas to bring vitality to the local economy. They suggest lifting heavy regulations in the service sector, which has the highest number of restrictions placed on it. Related officials in the aesthetic surgery industry say excessive regulations are taking a heavy toll on Korea's competitiveness in the field of aesthetic surgery. "There's a growing demand for aesthetic surgery in Korea and from abroad. But investors are getting increasingly more reluctant to invest in R&D for related technologies due to the regulations. This will affect the country's competitiveness in the field." Experts also suggest establishing a "K-Zone," a free economic zone that would make it easier for Koreans and foreigners to do business. The K-Zone would cover an area within a 2-thousand kilometer radius,... or a 3 hour flying distance from a designated area, such as the Incheon International Airport. That would likely include some parts of China, Japan, Mongolia and Taiwan,.. and extend to an estimated 1-point-5-billion people. "The K-Zone is not just a tourist site, it's a business and financial hub that would induce global companies and international organizations to put their headquarters in Korea." The expert added the government would also need to ease visa restrictions for residents living within the K-Zone, so foreigners could come and go easily. Kim Ji-yeon, Arirang News.

The greenbook for November points to improved consumer sentiment on rising demand for premium smartphones and gift purchases during the Chuseok Korean Thanksgiving holiday,... as well as during the Korea Sale Festa,... a month-long nationwide discount event. Last month, consumer sentiment rose one-point-five points from the previous month to 109-point-2... the highest since July... on expectations the tourism and retail sectors will recover as relations between Korea and China improve after the brawl over Seoul's deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system. It also shows money that would have been spent on real estate has instead been directed toward durable goods... following recent measures aimed at countering housing speculation. Sales of durable goods have risen for two consecutive quarters... after they dipped during the January-to-March period compared to the previous quarter. Critics have argued it's too early to be certain whether domestic consumption will continue to rebound this year and the next... pointing to the long-term effects of government measures and the amount of taxes it's expected to collect to boost its 'people-centered' economy initiative. Starting next year, the government will be implementing increases in the minimum wage, childcare support and the basic pension system. This comes as Korea's jobless rate fell to three-point-two percent for October,... a ten-month low... while youth unemployment dipped to its worst level in close to two decades. http://www.euronews.com/ Consumer-led growth is the buzz phrase among China's new rulers. With the changing of the guard at the National People's Congress, those taking over at the top have been told by the outgoing leaders to get the Chinese people spending more and narrow the gap between rich and poor. In the government's annual policy speech, outgoing Premier Wen Jiabao said that after decades of double-digit growth, the emphasis would no longer be on expansion at all costs: "This year's economic growth target of around 7.5 percent is necessary and appropriate, and we need to work hard to achieve it." He added: "We should unswervingly take expanding domestic demand as our long-term strategy for domestic development." The plan is to rebalance China's economic model shifting away from reliance on exports and investment in big infrastructure projects. An important part of government moves to boost domestic consumption is a substantially increase in social spending on areas like health-care - which will go up by 27 percent this year. The hope is that will free up money for households to spend. Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Hong Kong will face a difficult year ahead in 2016 says HKSAR Financial Secretary John Tsang. Speaking beside the Asian Financial Forum, he says Hong Kong’s external-facing economy is challenged by the economic “doldrums” of a number of partners so will have to rely a lot more on domestic consumption for growth. He says China’s Belt and Road Initiative offers excellent opportunities for Hong Kong’s commercial, logistics, professional services and finance sectors – as these are all needed by the 65 countries on the Belt and Road. Speaker: John Tsang, Financial Secretary, Hong Kong SAR Government Related Links: Hong Kong Trade Development Council http://www.hktdc.com/ Asian Financial Forum http://www.asianfinancialforum.com/en/index.htm

In the first quarter of this year, Beijing's Grade A office market showed a significant rebound in leasing activity, as rents increased for the first time and domestic firms continued to be dominant players. In line with economic recovery, retail demand was also warmer with aggressive expansions led by high-end super markets. As MNCs actively developed business, luxury apartment leasing for overseas expatriates also rose, while growth in the logistics sector remains positive and stable. http://www.joneslanglasalle.com.cn
